For on earth everything is at the point of collapse, nothing is sacred any longer, murder is paramount, brothers fight and slay one another, and the world is wicked. This is the age of swords, of the battleaxe that cleaves shields; this is the age of wind and the wolf, of the very day when the gods shall be no more.
--Voluspa ("What the Prophet Said"), Elder Eddas
The prophesied death of the Gods, Ragnarok actually came to pass over Memorial Day Weekend of 813, though not exactly in the way the sagas foretold it. The witch-queen Trillarillia threw her lot in with the returning forces of Shadow, and the gods of Ataniel were slain by them in a joint effort.
The original Ralchar, Shilrees first lover, is dead. So is the second Ralchar, a doppelganger of the first who infiltrated and betrayed the Significants (and incidentally got Shilree pregnant). Third times the charm, as they say, and the current Ralchar, a refugee from an alternate universe where everything works out for the best, is preternaturally lucky. Like the other two, he is a lawyer/thief, but his primary talent is his ability to unconsciously alter probability fields to his advantage.
--Who's Who V2
He was the first non-Diari I met after my exile who showed me some kindness. He took me in and taught me the skills I needed to surive in the foreign lands. Ralchar was killed during a war between two rival thieves' guilds. I guess I was kind of foolish falling for the doppelganger, but I did care for him very much.

I tried to draw a picture of her here for Kris' pinup thing, but it didn't come out as well as I'd hoped. Her hair
really is that shiny, but it looks kinda wiglike in the picture, and I couldn't get the eyebrows to work to save my life. So I'm a lousy artist; so sue me.
The face and the gloves are right, anyway.

Okay, I know people think I'm stupid for listening to the Rat, but damn it, any creature that bothered to learn net topology deserves my ear. Besides, he's a hell of a lot better company than Tor.

They are somewhat like one of the riddles of old. They are named for a rodent. Their ranks have included a donkey who talks like a man. One of their members heeds the advice of a rock which he believes to be an egg. Their leader's apprentice is fascinated by mental disorders. I would say that my time with them will certainly be interesting; however, in Shikintu it is a curse to wish someone to live in interesting times.

Rhynwa was one of the youngest of the major priests of Arawn. She was sixteen when she joined Signet and the Significants,
seventeen when she wielded the Sigil of Power in the Demon Wars against Kala, eighteen when she freed Lord Warp from the Wall and
defeated the fascist junta Tres, and only twenty-four when she joined the inner circle of Annwch, the same year Arawn himself met his end.
--from the Chronicles of the Sunfighter
Even though I never told her, Rhynwa amused me the most. Between Melvyn the teddy bear, the Death Dance of Joy and the endless
refrains of "I've got the hat, dammit!", it made adventuring with Signet actually tolerable.
--Shilree
For a death priestess, she's way excellent. Owe her my life many times over, so as payback I'm giving her son my entire Lego collection.

Scum center of Ataniel. Before the Cynystran occupation you just had to worry about getting your throat slit if a deal went bad. Now you just have worry about your throat getting slit.

A really good place to fence something, and some of the nightclubs are top-notch, but there's too much crime and human suffering around for it to rate as a vacation spot. It's also the hub of the slave trade. Someone tried to shanghai me once there and I had to kick his ass. Two stars. If you're looking for an undisciplined night life, head for the Archipelago: the weather's nicer and the people are less depressing.

Supposedly, Rumi is a small, ordinary, provincial little Nylevian port, where honest merchants like myself can do their business without too much trouble. Since I've come here, though, I've been attacked by a mob, rescued by some eclectic rat-worshippers, this woman punched this guy, this
assassin tried to stab this other guy in the back, and now it looks like we're crawling into a sewer. I'd say Rumi has an undeserved reputation for normalcy.
