Phantasmagoria Spoilers

Welcome to the new Computer Game Spoilers section of my gaming website. I added this section because I recently received questions about the plots of two different games which, to my surprise and embarrassment, I had totally forgotten the answers to. Then, to my further surprise, I was unable to find any existing website that would refresh my memory about the plots of computer games... lots of puzzle solutions, but no basic plot summaries.

So I figured I'd better write some of them down while they're still fresh in my mind, just in case I or anybody else wants to refer to them at some point in the future (or in case anybody suffers a major game glitch and just wants to know what was supposed to happen in the end-- I get letters like this from time to time.) If you haven't finished Phantasmagoria yet and you don't want the plot of this game to be revealed to you, then you don't want to read this page. Please go back to my main Phantasmagoria page, where I give tips and reviews without giving away any of its plot.

But if you are looking for plot spoilers, just scroll further down the page to find them!

Plot Summary

Happily married couple Adrienne and Don move into a creepy old mansion in Maine, and things start to go wrong. The player is controlling Adrienne, and she immediately begins to be menaced by supernatural occurrences. At first Don tries to help her, but after she accidentally frees an evil spirit, he begins to act erratic and aggressive, including yelling at her for no reason, becoming abusive during sex, and killing her cat. Adrienne starts to get disturbing visions about the previous owner of the house, Carno, murdering his wives in various disgusting ways. Eventually, it becomes clear that an evil demon was possessing Carno causing him to murder women, and the same demon is now possessing Don. Adrienne sticks around for a while hoping to save his soul, but there's no way for her to accomplish this, so in the end she has to kill him before he can kill her. She then performs an exorcism ritual to banish the demon forever, but it's too late for Don and the ending is gloomy.

Character Subplots and Secrets

Hortencia: One of Carno's wives, she was murdered when he choked her to death by shoveling dirt in her mouth.

Leonora: One of Carno's wives, she was murdered when he twisted her head until her neck snapped.

Regina: One of Carno's wives, she was murdered when he choked her to death by ramming meat down her throat (this was the most disgusting death.)

Victoria: One of Carno's wives, she was murdered when he impaled her through the eye with a wine bottle.

Marie and Gaston: Carno's last wife suspected he had it in for her, so she and her lover plotted to kill him first. They managed to set Carno on fire, but he recovered, overpowered Gaston, and then killed Marie with a swinging pendulum (the same one Don tries to kill Adrienne with.) But while he was doing that, the dying Gaston managed to stab him, killing him and ending his reign of terror (for the time being.)

Sofia: The 2-year-old daughter of Carno and Hortencia, it's not clear what happened to her-- Hortencia suggested that Carno killed her in the nursery, but then Adrienne had a vision of the little girl lying dead in the pond, so perhaps he drowned her instead.

Mike, Cyrus, and Harriett: These minor characters were apparently also killed by the possessed Don-- we see him killing Mike with a tire iron, and in the last chapter if you run around the mansion a lot before allowing Don to catch you, you can encounter the bodies of Cyrus and Harriett, presumably also killed by Don.
