Danger By Design Walkthrough

Welcome to my Danger By Design walk-through. (-: If you're new to my series of low-spoiler computer game walkthroughs, the idea is to point players towards things they might not have tried in each game rather than giving away puzzle solutions or offering step-by-step instructions.

These Nancy Drew games are structured a little differently than most graphic adventure games, though. In particular, you can solve most of the game's puzzles in any order you feel like, making a chronological walkthrough of little use. The physical area of Danger By Design is so small that it makes more sense to use a CRPG-style area guide rather than breaking the game down into chronological chapters. I've included a checklist of important tasks at the beginning and one of optional tasks at the end. Note that I don't tell you how to solve any of the puzzles--just where they are. If you've found a puzzle but just can't seem to get it right no matter what you do, UHS is a good place to go for a single hint that won't spoil the rest of the game for you.

Danger By Design: Key Tasks

If you find yourself getting stuck in the game, keep in mind that plot advancement is often arbitrary. If nothing is happening, you need to make sure that you have spoken to everyone until they have nothing more to say, looked around every area to see if there are any objects you haven't noticed, and used every object in your inventory. If all those things fail, take a look at this checklist of important tasks you will need to complete to solve the game (the order is somewhat up to you):

1) Talk to all the NPC's. Repeatedly. Having certain conversations with them (and obeying their requests) is necessary for the plot to progress.
2) Answer the phone immediately any time it rings (this will happen a couple of times.)
3) Make tea for Minette.
4) Examine the red paint on the wall in Minette's studio. (The game eventually stalls if you don't do this.)
5) Buy objects at the market for Minette. (Must have finished #3 first.)
6) Fix the plotter.
7) Develop Dieter's photos and deliver them to Jean-Michel.
8) Pick an envelope up from JJ.
9) Solve Prudence's ensemble puzzle. (She will call on the phone about it after you solve enough of the previous tasks.)
10) Beat Minette's computer game for her.
11) Bake cookies for JJ. (Must have finished #5, #7, #8 and #10 first.)
12) Solve the dodo bird puzzle. (Must have finished #11 and possibly #4.)
13) Fetch a stuffed parrot. (Must have finished #11 and possibly #4.)
14) Open the secret passage in Dieter's house. (Must have finished #13.)
15) Open the safe in the secret passage. (Must have finished #14.)
16) Fix Minette's cockroach problem. (Must have finished #12.)
17) Make parfaits for Jean Mi.
18) Take stock photos for Dieter.
19) Get Jing's autograph for Zu.
20) Solve the colored eyes puzzle. (Must have finished #15 and #18.)
21) Solve the puzzles in the park. (Must have finished #20.)
22) Go into the secret sewer tunnels and take two important items. (Must have finished #19, plus you also need a wetsuit.)
23) Solve the bomb-defusing puzzle. (This appears on its own at a certain point in the game, I believe after you have completed #21.)
24) Decode the M380 code. (Must have finished #22 and #17.)
25) Once you have finished all 24 of the previous steps, you can solve the final string of puzzles in the windmill and learn the truth.
26) Finally, you have to beat up the villain. No kidding, you have to win a physical fight.

And that's it, you've won!

*This is where you can find Heather, one of the five main NPC's in the game. You'll need to return to talk to her many times in order for the plot to advance.
*There is a phone here which you will sometimes need to answer.
*The dodo box is a puzzle, though you will not be able to solve it until Heather leaves.
*The design table is a puzzle, though you will not be able to solve it until Prudence calls on the phone.
*Nancy has a computer set up for her use, which she will eventually need to solve a puzzle. There is also a to-do list here you will need to check, and you can read the office email for some interesting background and some funny fan mail from previous villain Emily Griffen.
*In the desk drawer are some case notes from ubiquitous former employee Sonny Joon, which contain several clues.
*There is a magazine on the table here with some interesting background information in it.
*Once Heather leaves, you can look at her own design portfolio on her desk.

Studio

*This is where you can find Minette, one of the five main NPC's in the game. You'll need to return to talk to her many times in order for the plot to advance.
*The tea cart is a puzzle you will need to solve.
*Even though Minette tells you not to touch it, you can examine the dress form with the red cloth on it for some information.
*You can examine the millstones splashed with red paint against the wall.
*There is a magazine on the table here with some interesting background information in it.
*The pile of stuff in the center of the room is a clue for one of Minette's puzzles.
*Once Minette leaves, you can find two useful documents in the studio.

Dieter's House

*This is where you can find Dieter, one of the five main NPC's in the game. You'll need to return to talk to him many times in order for the plot to advance.
*You can play with Dieter's marble toy if you like-- that's just for fun.
*If you pick up Dieter's digital camera he will let you borrow it, although you won't need it till later in the game.
*There is a darkroom here which you will need to use to solve a puzzle.
*There is another puzzle area hidden in this room which you will not be able to find until later in the game.
*You can flush Dieter's toilet-- he will make a funny remark if you do. (There's also an easter egg related to this toilet.)

Cafe Kiki

*This is where you can find Jean-Michel, one of the five main NPC's in the game. You'll need to return to talk to him many times in order for the plot to advance.
*Later in the game, there is one object you will need to find here.

JJ's House

*This is where you can find Jing Jing, one of the five main NPC's in the game. You'll need to return to talk to her many times in order for the plot to advance.
*There is a phone here which Nancy will need to use to make calls (since the game has taken away her cellphone.)
*You will need to use JJ's kitchen island for a puzzle at one point in the game.
*The newspaper in JJ's house changes every day and includes relevant news items.
*There is a magazine by the telephone which contains a useful atricle about Zu.
*After JJ has left, you can look at the books she keeps in the kitchen cabinet.

The Park at Pont Neuf

*There are three characters here who you can see and talk to, named Marchand, Malika and Monique, but none of them have any relation to the plot-- they are just merchants from whom you can buy objects.
*Marchand will also give you a color-by-numbers task if you run low on Euros so that you can earn more.

The Catacombs

*There is a fake skull here that you will need to use to deliver something to Zu.
*After opening a secret passage (and eluding the police) you can find a large underwater maze.
*There is one plot item in the maze and a safe containing another plot item on the other side of it.

The Endgame Area

As usual in Nancy Drew games, once you have unlocked the final endgame area, there is nothing to be missed-- solve the final string of puzzles, learn the truth behind the mysteries, and win a final confrontation with the villain to win the game!

Danger By Design: Optional Actions

Have you:

*Gotten Heather to admit sending Minette a letter?
*Gotten Heather to admit her feelings for Dieter?
*Gotten JJ to explain how her agent tricked her into working for Minette? (You have to interrogate Jean Mi carefully to accomplish this.)
*Gotten Heather fired? (There is even a different blurb in the epilogue movie if you do this!)
*Translated the coded message Rose left for Noisette?
*Looked at the Ichi-Do library book to see who else has checked it out recently? :-)
